The Velvet Weaver | Framed Spider Brooch
The Velvet Weaver | Framed Spider Brooch
The Velvet Weaver is a one-of-a-kind spider brooch with a second life as a framed curiosity. Long, gold-toned legs sweep around honey-colored and smoky glass, tracing delicate arches against black velvet. An ornate oval frame gives this quiet resident of the cabinet a rather regal address.
I made this specimen using vintage glass and fluted gold-toned beads reclaimed from my mom’s jewelry from the 1990s, supplemented with small gold-toned metal beads and glass bugle beads. Part of the Vintage Glen series, it carries a little family history into a new, eight-legged form. No web required. The glass is vintage, not precious stone, and the metal components are gold-toned, not precious metal.
Keep it in its frame as a miniature cabinet-of-curiosities display, or easily remove it for wear by carefully slipping it out of the rubber clip that holds it in place. From velvet-backed specimen to statement brooch, this spider is permitted to leave its assigned quarters. Carefully made but very fragile, it calls for thoughtful handling and occasional adornment, not rough adventures. Handle gently when removing, wearing, and returning it to its display.
As with all pieces, this one is one of a kind. Once it's gone, it's gone.
